The Marshall Islands Quality Council meeting, held on March 21 in Stamford, U.S., included a discussion on the development of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) fuel oil consumption database, intended to support the implementation of MARPOL annex VI requirements, PortNews IAA reports.

As Ship & Bunker reported in November, IMO at the 70th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 70) adopted a mandatory fuel consumption data collection system for international shipping, requiring ships above 5,000 gross tonnage will be required to collect and report data to an IMO database, effective at the start of 2019.

Ships subject to the requirement are said to account for around 85 percent of the CO2 emissions from international shipping.

At the March 21 meeting, Theofanis Karayannis of the IMO is reported to have outlined work currently underway by the IMO Secretariat for the development the database, noting that a prototype version of a proposed module under the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) is slated for release to IMO Member States later in 2017.
