Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) today announced that it will supply six Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines to Viking Line's newbuild vessel, which is set to run primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the ship is being built at by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd (XSI) in China and is set for delivery in 2020.

In addition to the engines, Wärtsilä will supply the vessel's LNGPac fuel storage and supply system, Compact Silencer System (CSS), bow thrusters, ballast water management system, and a Nacos Platinum integrated navigation system.

"A new era in ferry operations was established in 2013 when Viking Line’s 'Viking Grace' with Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines became the world’s largest RoPax ferry to operate on LNG fuel," said Roger Holm President of Wärtsilä Marine Solutions.

"This latest Viking project represents another milestone as it will be the first vessel fitted with the highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF engines. Both cases highlight the value our know-how and technology brings to our customers."

Last week, Wärtsilä announced the introduction of a gas-fuelled version of its Wärtsilä 31 marine engine, the Wärtsilä 31SG.
