Clarksons Research (Clarksons) says its World Fleet Register currently shows that, among 130 newbuild contracts recorded for 2017 so far, 21 - just of 16 percent - are for vessels capable of using LNG bunkers.

Overall, the firm says there are a total 542 merchant ships within the global fleet and on order that are capable of using LNG as fuel.

However 351 of those vessels are noted to be LNG carriers that can utilise cargo boil-off as fuel.

"LNG has been identified as a cleaner fuel capable of reducing vessel emissions in line with new regulations," said Clarksons.

"In other sectors LNG fuel has taken longer to gain market share, but there are signs that where ship designs and the supply of bunkers allow, it is becoming more popular."

As Ship & Bunker reported last month, according to a report by LNG World Shipping, there was 103 LNG-fuelled vessels in-service at the time, with another 97 on order - a 23 percent year on year increase.
