The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) today said that, along with BIMCO, INTERCARGO, and INTERTANKO, the organisation has made a joint proposal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) concerning "ambitious" CO2 reductions by the international shipping industry.

As promised earlier this month by ICS, the submission suggests that IMO Member States should immediately adopt two "Aspirational Objectives" on behalf of the international shipping sector, including the maintenance of international shipping's annual total CO2 emissions below 2008 levels, and the reduction CO2 emissions per tonne of cargo transported one kilometre, as an average across international shipping, by at least 50 percent by 2050, compared to 2008.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee is set to meet in July to begin the development of a strategy for the reduction of the sector's CO2 emissions.

In the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) and ICS issued a statement urging the European Union (EU) and China to intensify cooperation to achieve a global climate deal for shipping.
