Corvus Energy today announced that it will supply a 3 MWh Orca Energy Storage System (ESS) for a new Norwegian Coastal Authority (NCA) hybrid vessel, OV Ryvingen.

Ryvingen is NCA's second vessel to feature traditional diesel power with battery-driven operation and the fourth vessel under the administration's fleet renewal programme.

Corvus Energy notes that the Orca Energy ESS will supply electrical power for all-electric propulsion and for electrical needs while the ship is docked.

Equipped by Rolls-Royce, Ryvingen will have an available capacity of 2938 kWh, enabling the vessel to run on battery power alone for several hours, without using the diesel engine.

Ryvingen's batteries will be recharged from an onshore power supply in ports where available.

"The electrification of vessels will see an increasing utilization of higher battery capacities," said Halvard Hauso, Senior Vice President of Business Development of Corvus Energy.

"As with the Ryvingen, an increasing number of vessels will use the Orca energy storage system to deliver a greater proportion of the vessel's power."

Earlier this month, Corvus Energy announced that it will supply its Orca ESS to two platform supply vessels (PSVs) being retrofitted with hybrid power systems, the Havila Foresight and the Havila Charisma - both of which are on long-term charter to Statoil ASA (Statoil).
