The University of Turku says it has received funding from the European Union (EU) to take part in ECOPRODIGI, a project intended to increase maritime sector eco-efficiency in the Baltic Sea region through digital solutions.

Led by the University of Turku, the project is slated to run for three years, and will focus on creating and piloting digital solutions for vessel performance monitoring, cargo stowage optimisation, and shipyard process optimisation.

The project will design and pilot training programmes for shipyard ecosystems, as well as organise public events for deepening the networks within the maritime sector.

"ECOPRODIGI project kick-starts a unique collaboration between research organisations and the industry end-users to create and pilot digital solutions increasing eco-efficiency throughout the vessel life cycle," explained the university.

"Ultimately, ECOPRODIGI supports Baltic Sea region in becoming a front-runner in maritime industry digitalisation and clean shipping."

So far, the ECOPRODIGI project has received more than €3 million ($3.54 million) from the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme, as well as project partners' own contributions, to bring the inititaive's budget to €4.2 million ($4.96 million).
