International oil and gas industry shipper EXMAR NV (EXMAR) has ordered up to eight 38,000 cubic meter capacity LNG carriers from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD).

The fuel saving, LPG-ready new builds will be delivered from the first quarter of 2014 onwards.

The Belgium based business says the vessels have been designed to stay ahead of the upcoming amendments in environmental legislation, specifically:

  • Hull lines optimization to reduce resistance in water, which will reduce fuel consumption and therefore, emissions.
  • Ballast water treatment system to minimize transfer of harmful aquatic organisms.
  • Funnel design facilitating the installation of a scrubber that reduces sulphur air emissions.
  • Engine room and deck design ready for LNG or LPG as fuel

South Korea's HMD will add the deal to last month's KRW 279 billion ($248.1 million) order from Kuwait Oil Tanker Co (KOTC) as it chases a 2012 new order target of $3.2 billion.
