Matson, Inc. (Matson) has announced that, along with Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), it has reached an important milestone in the construction of the first of two new "Aloha Class" dual-fuel container ships, having held a ceremony for the first engine room section being lowered into place.

"The new vessels will incorporate a number of 'green ship technology' features that will help protect the environment, including a more fuel efficient hull design, dual fuel engines that can be adapted to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks and fresh water ballast systems," explained Matson.

Designed specifically for Hawaii service, the vessels are said to be set to become the largest container ships ever built in the U.S.

The vessels are set to be delivered to Matson in 2018's Q3 and 2019's Q1, respectively.
