Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) today announced that its Italy-based brand Costa Cruises achieved a 3 percent reduction in fuel consumption per passenger per day in 2016 compared to the previous year.

The results, which were presented in Costa Cruises' newest sustainability report, also showed that the company achieved a 5 percent decrease in its carbon footprint during the year compared to 2015, as well as a 9 percent reduction in SOx emissions and a 4 percent reduction in emissions of NOx and particulate matter.

In terms of reducing emissions and fuel consumption, Costa Cruises points to the installation of the ECO Exhaust Gas Cleaning (ECO-EGCTM) system on the company's ships, vessel maintenance, streamlined navigation systems and systems for onboard services, and the use of digital instruments for monitoring the fleet's environmental performance as the most significant projects.

Speaking on the roadmap the company created three years ago, Stefania Lallai, Sustainability and External Relations Director of Costa Cruises, said the plan "places sustainability at the centre of an integrated and multi-stakeholder approach."

"This led us to achieve a successful series of projects which implicate the direct involvement of the major players: the next step on the way to an increasingly sustainable future will be to make our guests play a progressively more active part as well, essential in order to achieve results and experiences that go beyond a cruise holiday."

As Ship & Bunker has reported, Carnival now has a total of seven new LNG-powered cruise ships on order across four of its 10 cruise brands, with the first of these set to be delivered to Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises.
