ABB Promises Up To 20% Fuel Reduction
Swiss power and automation technology company ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) has launched a marine advisory and automation system that it says can reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent.
The company has introduced several software applications that combine energy management functions with the Amarcon Octopus weather-routing system, which lets ships plot routes based on real-time weather conditions.
ABB announced plans to acquire the Netherlands-based Amarcon BV in July.
"By aggregating Amarcon systems into ABB's solutions, we are now able to provide the widest portfolio of optimization tools available on the market," said Heikki Soljama, the head of ABB's Marine and Cranes business unit.
"With these solutions, we are better equipped to help ship operators reduce fuel consumption efficiently and provide added-value technology to all ship owners."
ABB said fuel efficiency is a growing concern as the daily costs of operating a vessel are now higher than daily building costs for the first time in history, and fuel consumption is becoming the most expensive part of operations.
In June, the company announced that it would be installing its energy management systems on five vessels for German global transportation firm Rickmers Group, and in January it said it will provide the systems for Viking Line cruise ships.
