Shipper Seaboard Marine has announced it will switch early to using 0.10 percent sulfur bunkers in order to ensure it is fully compliant with North American Emissions Control Area (ECA) rules come January 1.

"Effective immediately, Seaboard Marine will begin vacating our current supply of higher sulfur fuel," said Seaboard Marine.

"Seaboard Marine will commence use of the approved lower sulfur fuel in mid-November to ensure operational compliance as of January 1, 2015," it added.

The company also announced it will make further efficiency gains having signed a new vessel sharing agreement (VSA) and amended its existing one with Crowley Maritime Corp. (Crowley).

The new VSA will commence mid-November and see a new weekly service operating between Port Everglades, Florida, U.S. and Port Haina in the Dominican Republic.

In addition, an existing VSA has been amended so that ships on the U.S to Panama and Costa Rica route will call only at Port Miami in the U.S. before sailing south.

"These two arrangements permit us to gain efficiencies while enhancing schedule integrity to our customers," said Edward Gonzalez, Seaboard Marine's President and CEO.

Seaboard Marine announced in August that it would implement a low sulfur surcharge in response to new ECA rules.

Other shippers, including OOCL, have recently announced the likely quantum of such charges.
