WFS Has "Serious Objections" To Lac-Mégantic Cleanup Costs Order
World Fuel Services Corp. [NYSE:INT] (WFS) says it was surprised by an order announced Tuesday by the Quebec government that named the company as one of the parties responsible for funding clean-up efforts at the site of the Lac- Mégantic train disaster.
"Given that Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA) and local authorities have assumed control and management of the site to date, and that MMA has assumed responsibility for the accident, we did not expect to be named in this or any similar government action," the company said in a statement.
WFS said it has already deployed its own environmental experts to monitor the work being done by contractors in Lac-Mégantic, the small Canadian town that was devastated by the accident.
"This order is the first time the provincial government has taken the position that World Fuel Services has any responsibility for funding or supervising the activities of third parties currently under the control of MMA and local authorities," the company said, adding that it has "serious objections to the legality of the order" and plans to take the issue up with the authorities.
The government order named Western Petroleum Company, MMA, and an associated company, as well as WFS as parties responsible for the cleanup.
Following the July 6 derailment and explosion, which killed 47 people and levelled much of the Lac-Mégantic town centre, WFS acknowledged the train was carrying oil sold by one of its units.
