William Doyle, a commissioner with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), says representatives of the major container carriers are looking for new partners following the recently announced Ocean Alliance and were set to meet with the U.S. FMC to discuss the proposal of a possible new alliance.

Speaking last week at the Intermodal Association of North America, Doyle did not specify which carriers, nor how many, would be attending the meeting with FMC, according to a report by MarineLink.

"I can tell you that by the end of next week there is a likelihood that another new alliance will be announced," said Doyle.

"I will be meeting with ocean carrier representatives next. It may not include all of the remaining eight carriers, but it could eventually."

The eight carriers in question are Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd), Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd (Hanjin), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line), Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming), and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).

Hamburg Sϋd - currently partners with UASC and CMA CGM - could also be brought into the mix.

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, last week Alphaliner suggested that box carriers orphaned following a shake up of existing alliances could combine to form a new "third force" alliance to rival both Ocean Alliance, and the 2M alliance of the world's two biggest carriers, Maersk Line and MSC.
