ABS Releases Advisory for Shipowners Considering Scrubbers
Maritime classification service company ABS has released a new advisory on exhaust gas scrubber systems designed to help ship owners consider scrubbers as a possible solution for meeting environmental requirements.
The firm said fuel switching, commonly used to meet more stringent requirements in emissions control areas (ECAs) today "is not expected to be a viable option in the future," and vessel owners face a challenge in choosing among other options including higher priced low-sulfur fuels, alternative fuels, and scrubbers.
"Owners and operators mindful of stringent low sulfur fuel oil requirements are seeking cost-effective solutions that best meet their expected operating profile," says Howard Fireman, ABS's vice president for operational and environmental performance.
"This Advisory highlights the relevant regulatory and technical considerations that should be taken into account when making decisions on how to comply with emissions requirements."
Fireman said the advisory was developed to help owners understand regulations and available technologies and then match the most cost-effective solution to their operational plans.
ABS also has advisories available on propulsion and gas fuelled ships that can assist owners in looking at various alternative solutions.
Maritime experts have been debating the best ways to comply with new emissions rules, while some industry groups have warned that all types of adjustments could be prohibitively expensive.
