Japan-based Imoto Lines, Ltd. (Imoto Lines) says that the curved bow design featured on one of the company's 540 TEU container vessels facilitates a 5 percent bunker savings compared to conventional vessels of the same size, JOC reports.

The vessel, which is said to enable the fuel savings by reducing wind pressure on the ship by 30 percent, is also noted to feature a high-efficiency propeller and bunker-saving paint, as well as a piping system that prevents oil loss during bunkering.

While Imoto Lines promises a 5 percent fuel savings can be gleaned with the curved bow design, it is reported that such savings are only possible when the vessel is operating at high speeds.

The shipbuilder, Kyokuyo Shipyard Corp., is reported to have previously used the bow design on two RoRo vessels, the M/V City of St Petersburg and the M/V City of Rotterdamm.

In August, Ship & Bunker reported that Taiwan's Evergreen Group ordered ten 2,800 TEU vessels, said to reduce fuel consumption by around 10 percent, and featuring Sea-Sword Bow technology from Taiwan-based CSBC Corporation.
