Maui-based Pacific Biodiesel will resume supplying fuel in Maalaea Harbour after receiving a new fuelling permit and expanding production, reports Pacific Business News.

The company has been producing biodiesel in Hawaii since 1996, but stopped services at its facility at the Central Maui Landfill in April after the company became unable to keep up with increased "on-road" demand with its limited production and supply.

At the time, the company said that it couldn't justify the high cost of site upgrades.

"Now that we have the larger capacity, and advanced technology that produces the highest quality biodiesel in America, we are expanding into high-value tourism markets with customers who care about the environment and want to attract eco-conscious visitors to their activities," said Bob King, president and founder of Pacific Biodiesel.

"The marine industry should be first and foremost about protecting the ocean and delivering a healthier experience for ocean-goers."

Aqua Adventures Maui will be Pacific Biodiesel's first client under the new fuelling permit.

A report from earlier this year also predicted that the biofuels market will continue to grow, reaching an estimated 6.1 percent of the U.S. marine fuels and aviation market by 2024.
