Brooklyn Shore Power System Close to Starting Regular Operations
Shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal appears to be almost open for regular operation after months of delays.
The news follows local media reports suggesting the facilities have been ready for operations for several months, but its opening had been prevented by operational issues such as who would foot the cost of the electricity bill.
However, Cunard Line has confirmed to Ship & Bunker that its Queen Mary 2 will plug into the $21 million system on November 12 - indicating the system is finally ready for regular operations.
Brooklyn's shore power system is said to be largely intended for use by Cunard Line and Princess Cruises - the terminal's main customers.
Shore power is just one of the projects aimed at more environmentally friendly maritime operations at the port.
In July, Ship & Bunker reported that Incat Crowther had unveiled the design of a new fleet of fuel efficient vessels for Hornblower, New York City's new Citywide Ferry Service operator.
