Eagle LNG Partners LLC (Eagle LNG) Tuesday announced that it has begun construction on its "state-of-the-art" liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in West Jacksonville, Florida, which will be ready to supply LNG bunkers to Crowley Maritime Corporation (Crowely) vessels by early 2017.

"This is a very important and welcome development for Crowley and for the Northeast Florida region as a whole," said John Hourihan, Crowley's senior vice president and general manager for Puerto Rico services.

"Having reliable access to sufficient quantities of LNG will be essential to our operations as we introduce our new LNG powered Commitment-Class ConRo ships to the Puerto Rico market next year."

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, Crowley has announced that Crowley Puerto Rico Services, Inc. (Crowley Puerto Rico Services) selected Eagle LNG to supply LNG bunkers to the company's new Commitment Class ConRo ships, which are said to be set for delivery in 2017, and will be used in trade between the U.S. mainland and Puerto Rico.

A dockside fuel depot will be built at the Talleyrand Marine Terminal on the St. Johns River to support bunkering operations, says the company.

Eagle LNG says the facility will have a production capacity of 200,000 gallons per day - up from 87,000 gallons per day initially - which exceeds Crowley's needs, and as such, LNG from the plant will be available for sale to domestic clients in the Southeast, as well as island customers interested in containerised supplies.

Eagle LNG says the plant will feature a 1,000,000 gallon storage tank and a LNG truck loading system.

In September, Marine Firefighting Inc. (Marine Firefighting) announced that it had joined forces with Gas Technology Institute (GTI) to train 150 Port of Jacksonville area stakeholders on LNG bunkering awareness and safety through a program funded by a group of companies with current LNG projects underway, including Crowley and Eagle LNG, among others.
