Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) [TYO:9101] has announced it is to build four new Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) that will have an expected per vessel fuel performance improved by about 30 percent.

NYK Line said it expects the worldwide demand for PCTC transport to steadily expand, and the four new vessels will be capable of transiting the expanded Panama Canal when it becomes operational in the autumn of 2014.

According to the press release, the "next-generation" 7,000 vehicle capacity PCTCs will be fitted with the latest energy-saving technology, and at 35–36 meters wide NYK Line say they will be 2-3 meters wider than current PCTCs.

The vessels will be built in Japan and are scheduled to be completed from 2014 to 2015.

Two PCTCs are being built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co. Ltd, and two by Imabari Shipbuilding Co. Ltd who will have technical assistance being provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.

NYK Line said they are the first PCTCs it has decided to build since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.
