The Standard Club Friday issued an alert reminding members of China's mandatory implementation of three emission control areas (ECAs) covering the country's key ports, including Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, Tangshan, Huanghua, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Suzhou, and Nantong, effective January 1, 2017.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the ECA regulations will initially require ships at berth in affected ports to use fuel with a sulfur content of no more than 0.5 percent, except during the first hour after arrival and the last hour before departure.

"Members are therefore recommended to ensure that their ships due for calling the key ports within the ECAs comply with relevant requirements and regulations," said the Standard Club.

As previously reported, several of the core Yangtze River Delta ports had already voluntarily implemented the new rules earlier than the otherwise mandatory January 1, 2017, start date.
