Tallink Orders "New Generation" Energy Efficient LNG Ferry
Estonian shipper AS Tallink Grupp has ordered a "New Generation" liquefied natural gas (LNG) car-passenger ferry for its Tallinn-Helsinki route, the company announced.
Tallink said that it had signed an agreement with Meyer Turku Oy to construct the 2800-passenger capacity LNG vessel for roughly €230 million. ($284.6 million)
The ship, in addition to complying with upcoming sulfur regulations, was also designed for energy efficiency and increasing recycling utilisation.
"As the market leader and a long time operator on the route we have a good understanding of customer expectations and know what needs improvement," said board member Janek Stalmeister.
"This new ferry prototype gives us an excellent opportunity to apply improved design & building methods."
The vessel, which is the seventh Tallink ferry to come from Meyer Turku since 2002, will be built at the Turku shipyard in Finland and is slated for delivery at the beginning of 2017.
Neste Oil also recently announced that it has signed a deal to provide low-sulfur marine diesel oil (MDO) to Tallink's ferries.
