Neste Oil Tuesday announced it has signed a partnership agreement to supply AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) with marine diesel (MDO) that complies with new 2015 regulations for Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) and will have a sulfur content below 0.10 percent.

Neste Oil will provide the fuel to Tallink ferries, a well-known brand in Nordic and Baltic countries, when they call Finnish ports, Helsinki and Turku.

Neste Oil said the deal opened new market potential for the company and was part of the its goal of becoming a player in the marine fuel sector, as it is for land and air transport.

"We are already a major player in the Baltic Sea region on petroleum products used on land and in the air," said Neste Oil Sales Director Olli Vesamo.

"The new EU Sulfur Directive with its stringent environmental requirements and our capability to produce cleaner traffic solutions now enables us to take foothold also in the marine sector."

Neste Oil said its product offered "an interesting alternative for shipping companies, since its introduction will only require minor technical modifications in the ships."

Neste Oil earlier this year said it would produce the MDO at Porvoo and Naantali in Finland and in recent weeks said the fuel would be ready by the end of 2014.
