Finnish Refineries to Produce Low-Sulfur Bunkers
Neste Oil says it will begin producing low-sulfur bunker fuel for Finnish ports by the end of the year as the shipping industry prepares for new emissions rules to take effect in 2015.
"Our aim, as part of our strategy, is to continually offer customers cleaner fuel solutions, and our new low-sulfur bunker fuel is an excellent example of our capability to meet the tightening environmental requirements," said Olli Vesamo, director of direct sales.
The company will produce the fuel, which will comply with the 0.10 percent limit on sulfur content taking effect in European Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) at its refineries in Porvoo and Naantali, Finland.
"The new fuel is a much more highly refined product than conventional bunker fuel," Vesamo said.
"As we remove virtually all the sulfur during the refining process, using it will enable ships to comply with the strict new sulfur limit due to come into force at the beginning of next year."
Adrian Tolson, North America general manager for OW Bunker, said earlier this spring that questions remain about what types of low-sulfur fuel will be sold to comply with the new standards.
