A marine engine newly launched in the UK promises to be capable of running on 100 percent biodiesel fuel, industry news site Maritime Journal reports.

The heavy duty engines are built by AGCO Power in Finland and sold in the UK by Mermaid Marine.

The engines, known as the Citius series, are available in four and six cylinder versions and between 130 and 410 horsepower.

"The importance of biodiesel is continuously increasing with biodiesel such as rapeseed accepted as an alternative fuel for use in engines," said Mermaid Marine sales executive Julian Osborne.

"The fuel – either 100% biodiesel alone, or in any mixture ratio with diesel fuel according to EN 590 or ASTM D975 - can be used in all the engines which are equipped with a mechanic or electronically controlled injection pump."

The engines comply with IMO 2 emissions rules and can be adapted to comply with IMO 3 legislation.

Some biofuel blends are capable of fuelling standard diesel engines, but many, like one tested recently by the U.S. Maritime Administration, are at least half standard diesel.
