Brittany Ferries has announced plans for the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ferry, Ouest France reports.

STX France will build the ferry, which Brittany said reflects its efforts to improve its fleet's environmental footprint, at its Saint Nazaire shipyard.

The ship will use dual-fuel engines and a high-efficiency electric propulsion system, reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 15 to 20 percent compared with existing ferries and nearly eliminating nitrogen oxide (NOX) and sulfur oxide (SOX) emissions, Shipping Herald reports.

The ship will use light compound materials, high-strength glues, and efficient hull design.

It will be able to accommodate 2,400 passengers, 650 cars, and 40 trucks and will have a maximum speed of 25 knots.
