UK-based Filtertechnik Ltd. has announced the release of a new fuel quality monitor that it has dubbed a "lab in a box."

According to the company, the system can accurately determine density, particulate, and water content in all diesel fuels, gasoils, and bunker fuels travelling through the monitor in real time.

In addition to a laser particle counter and a water sensor that provides an ISO cleanliness code, a density sensor can reportedly detect a one percent addition of a foreign substance, such as kerosene, being added to diesel.

Filtertechnik says the system is especially useful in African nations where fuel theft can be common.

"The return on investment is very high, a single fuel delivery that is found to be out of specification or has been tampered with could pay for the Fuel Quality Monitor immediately," said Managing Director Richard Price.

He added that he expects the system to be sold in "large numbers."

Earlier this month, Citracks also announced plans to launch its Marine Fuel Management System for the Nigerian market.
