Debunkered and Refloated, MV Benita Now Being Towed for Demolition
Five Ocean Salvage Wednesday announced that MV Benita, which has now been debunkered and refloated, will be towed to the Indian coast from Mauritius for demolition.
The vessel ran aground June 17 after a brawl broke out onboard, resulting in the grounding and a subsequent bunker spill.
"Over the last few days we have been assessing the tow-worthiness of the casualty and preparing for demolition tow to India which is the destination of the tow," said Five Ocean Salvage, noting that both the condition of the ship and the weather have been making the towing operation difficult.
Last week, Five Ocean Salvage said that more than 200 cubic metres (cbm) of contaminated fuel oil and lubrication oil had been safely removed from the vessel.
As Ship & Bunker previously reported, fuel oil removed from the grounded vessel was to be transported for treatment by the Virgin Oil Company (Mauritius) Ltd (Virgin Oil Company Mauritius).
