The planned new Suez Canal waterway project will include bunkering stations along the eastern side of the canal, Mohab Memish, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said Wednesday, according to Egyptian news site Ahram Online.

"This project will place Egypt in the forefront of international trade within a few years," Memish said.

He said the new waterway, to be dug alongside the existing Suez Canal, will increase its revenues by 259 percent.

He said the project was a "necessity" because of the growth in international trade.

The project will also include tourist resorts.

The new canal is part of the Suez Canal Development mega-project, which also includes several seaports to be built in the governorates of Suez, Ismailia, and Port Said, which border the canal.

The construction of the new 72 kilometre-long canal will be overseen by the Egyptian army.
