Cruise Ship Returns to ECA Port After Scrubber Approval
The Maryland Port Administration Sunday announced the resumption of services by cruise operator Carnival from the Port of Baltimore.
The Carnival Pride ceased operating at the port in October 2014 to undergo a renovation, including the installation of scrubber technology to enable it to meet new, stricter Emissions Control Area (ECA) regulations in place since January.
"Maryland values our long-standing relationship with Carnival and we are delighted to welcome the Carnival Pride back to her home port," said Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn.
The 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride is expected to offer year-round cruises from the port to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.
In 2014, nearly 200,000 passengers sailed on 89 cruises from the Port of Baltimore.
Carnival has announced plans to fit more than 70 of its fleet with scrubbers to comply with ECA regulations.
On Friday, Carnival announced a drop in fuel costs and consumption in the first quarter of its 2015 financial year.
