A new Dragon-class liquid gas transport vessel which features Wärtsilä Corporation systems and engines has been delivered to Evergas, Wärtsilä announced last week.

The 27,500 cubic metre (cbm) ship is the first in a series, and was built at the Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China

It features a two Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines, propulsion equipment, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system and a cargo handling system, said the company.

Once operational, the ship is expected to be chartered by INEOS Europe to transport ethane to Europe from the U.S.

"The delivery of the first in this series of the Dragon class vessels marks the beginning of a new era in the transportation of liquefied gases," said Steffen Jacobsen, CEO of Evergas.

"The highly advanced technological solutions that Wärtsilä provides makes these ships the most modern and environmentally sustainable gas carriers ever built."

Though built specifically for ethane, the ship can reportedly also carry other petrochemical gases such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and LNG.

The series of ships are currently thought to be the largest ethane carriers in the world.

Last week, Wärtsilä also announced that it has developed propulsion systems capable of operating with Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) required in U.S. waters.
