For most of 2013, monthly bunker sales in Singapore have been lower than in the previous year, but the latest official data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) shows a strong performance in September and October has helped close the gap on the volume achieved in 2012.

The world's largest bunkering port made a promising start to 2013 with a monthly total for all products of 3.78 million metric tonnes (mt) - 119,100 mt higher than in January 2012.

However lower month-on-month sales over the following five months meant that the total volume for the six months to June 2013 was down 4 percent, or 856,200 mt, compared to the same period in 2012.

Combined Sales in July and August were almost identical in both 2012 and 2013, at around 7.2 million mt.

Sales since then have been much stronger, and the volumes reported this year for September and October were 9 and 8 percent higher year-on-year respectively.

MPA's most recent data shows that as at the end of October 2013 year-to-date sales are now only 282,200 mt lower, or about 1 percent, compared to the same period in 2012.

Over the ten years since 2002 Singapore has more than doubled its annual bunker sales volume, rising from 20.1 million mt in 2002 to an all time high of 43.2 million mt in 2011, before slipping to 42.7 million mt last year.
