A bulk carrier being built by Japanese company Imabari Shipbuilding is to have a new engine unit installed able to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

The high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation feature was developed by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, maritime news provider Lloyd's List reports.

The Mitsui E&S development is a response to the International Maritime Organization's NOx Tier III requirements, which outline a 80% reduction in NOx emissions from marine diesel engines.

Curently, this can only be done by using systems such as selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation or fuel treatment when operating with oil, the report said.

In addition, Mitsui E&S is developing new technologies to reduce the output of sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide from vessels.
