A ship attempting to berth in Taiwan last week was reported to have spilled 11,580 litres of bunker fuel at the Port of Kaohsiung, IHS Maritime 360 reports.

The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was reportedly attempting to berth when an operational mistake led it to crash into the terminal and break the oil tank.

The ship was subsequently detained.

According to the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), the spill has been managed, though the accident has led to the waters at piers 61-66,118, and 119 to be polluted.

The port also experienced a similar spill last year, when a chemical tanker spilled 1.63 tonnes of refined resin oil.

Last month, a collision between a carrier and a tanker at the Port of Singapore spilled 4,500 tonnes of Madura crude oil into Singapore waters.
