Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order to supply a high-pressure gas supply system for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Hitachi Zosen Corporation, MHI announced this week.

Hitachi Zosen reportedly intends to test the system within its marine diesel test engine once it is delivered in the second half of 2016.

If successful, the system is expected to be installed on all the marine diesel engines that Hitachi Zosen manufactures.

According to MHI, LNG is pressurized and delivered by a liquid pump within the system, and also boast of compact configuration, low power consumption, and a design that also enables installation in ships where space is limited.

"In recent years vigorous calls are being heard in the global marine transport industry to take steps to reduce energy consumption and protect the global environment," the company said.

"Against this backdrop, attention today is focusing on LNG fuel as one of important solutions enabling significant reductions in gas emissions."

MHI added that going forward, it would be focusing on marketing its system, in addition to expanding its shipbuilding and marine engineering segments.

Last year, MHI also launched its low speed marine diesel engine, which the company said offered more efficient fuel consumption than competitors.
