Marking the latest step toward the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at the port, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) today announced that, along with the Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd (SLNG), it has launched Singapore's first LNG truck loading facility during a ceremony held on April 12 at the SLNG Terminal.

The terminal's launch was officiated by John Ng, CEO of SLNG, and Andrew Tan, CEO of MPA.

"As the leading bunkering hub in the world, we need to ensure that we cater to the future energy needs of the global shipping industry by providing cleaner, alternative sources of fuel. While it may take time for LNG to take off as a marine fuel globally, we have taken steps to kick-start LNG bunkering in Singapore through our LNG Bunkering Pilot Programme," said Tan.

"The completion of the truck loading facility marks another important milestone as it will enable truck-to-ship LNG bunkering in Singapore. MPA will continue to work with our stakeholders to put in place a framework to provide safe, efficient and reliable LNG bunkering in the Port of Singapore."

The SLNG Terminal, which is located on Jurong Island, is a single-bay facility, although the terminal's master plan provides for the addition of at least another four truck loading bays as LNG demand grows.

"SLNG is proud to have been able to develop this facility with the support of the MPA and in doing so, help to concurrently kick-start the development of LNG trucking and LNG bunkering in Singapore," said Ng.

"While it is still too early to tell how fast or how far these businesses will grow, the prospects look good, particularly for LNG bunkering."

As Ship & Bunker reported in October, through an MOU with SLNG, MPA committed $2 million to co-fund the development of the facility.
