K Line Secures Bio-LNG Supply for LNG-Fuelled Car Carriers
Japanese shipping firm Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has signed an agreement to secure long-term supplies of bio-LNG from an unnamed supplier and has begun using the fuel in its LNG-fuelled car carriers.
The company expects the move to cut GHG emissions by around 60,800 tonnes per year, it said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
Bio-LNG is produced from organic waste such as livestock and food residues and can be used in existing LNG-fuelled vessels without modification.
The fuel being used is ISCC-EU certified, aligning with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive and supporting supply chain decarbonisation efforts.
The initiative forms part of K LINE’s Environmental Vision 2050, which targets net-zero emissions by mid-century, with bio-LNG seen as a near-term solution alongside future zero-emission fuels.
Last year, K Line completed its first bio-LNG bunkering operation of a car carrier at Port of Zeebrugge, with the fuel supplied by Shell Western LNG BV.
