Skuld Warns on Vessel Speed in Singapore Waters
In response to a number of recent ship collisions in Singapore waters, maritime insurer Skuld has issued a reminder of the need for safe practices around the Asian transportation hub.
Skuld said safe speed is a "key element" in avoiding collisions given the large numbers of ships operating in the area.
"Past experience of matters attended to by the Association has shown that timely steps to appropriately adjust speed, especially in potentially uncertain circumstances with relation to other traffic, can help to avoid collisions or help to mitigate the situation," Christian Ott, vice president of claims for Skuld Singapore, said in a statement.
Between late January and early February, three ship collisions took place in Singapore waters, leading to bunker spills and prompting the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to hold dialogue sessions on navigation safety and look into possible systemic problems.
