Japan’s Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co has delivered what it says is the world’s first LNG dual-fuel Kamsarmax bulk carrier.

The vessel named Oceana Frontier was officially handed over at its Fukuyama yard this week, the shipbuilder said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on LNG and conventional marine fuels.

Tsuneishi said the ship achieves over a 50% reduction in energy efficiency design index (EEDI), exceeding the phase 3 requirement of 30% from 2025.

Efficiency gains come from hull optimisation and energy-saving systems, including a shaft generator.

Tsuneishi has not shared details of the owner of the ship.

The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 921 ships, with another 663 expected to join the fleet by 2030, according to classification society DNV data.

As more LNG-fuelled ships join the fleet, demand for bio-LNG, a cleaner alternative to LNG, is expected to grow.

Earlier this year, Tsuneishi delivered the world’s first dual-fuel methanol Kamsarmax bulk carrier for charter to commodities firm Cargill.
