Singapore Could Prosecute Over Bunker Spills
Singapore's Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will do whatever is needed to bring responsible parties to task if oil spills resulted from improper conduct, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim told Parliament, according to Channel News Asia.
Faishal spoke in response to a question about steps being taken in response to recent bunker spills in Singapore waters.
Depending on the results of MPA investigations into the circumstances of the spills, the responsible parties may be prosecuted, he said.
The MPA will also disseminate findings from the investigations to the shipping community to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Faishal said Singapore also reports every incident in its waters to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and works with other countries and organizations to promote maritime safety and environmental protection.
Earlier this month, the MPA announced an investigation into the causes of three recent collisions that resulted in bunker spills.
