Enagás S.A. (Enagás) today announced that, along with Repsol S.A. (Repsol), it has conducted the first pipe-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation in Europe.

Supplier Repsol and infrastructure manager Enagás carried out the operation at the Enagás regasification plant in Cartagena using flexible cryogenic transfer hoses to connect the ship directly to the terminal.

"This type of supply was made possible as a result of the adaptations made to the Enagás plant jetty in the Port of Cartagena, in accordance with industry standards. It also highlights the commitment to innovation in the provision of new services by regasification plants," said Enagás.

The bunkering operation supplied Damia Desgagnés with 370 cubic metres (cbm) of LNG - said to be the largest supplied to date in Spain and by Repsol.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, Damia Desgagnés is noted to be Canada's first dual fuel LNG-powered combo carrier, capable of burning LNG, heavy fuel oil, or marine diesel oil.

"This operation was fruit of the collaboration between Repsol, Enagás and the Port of Cartagena Authority, and took place within the CORE LNGas hive project, co-funded by the European Commission, which is coordinated by Enagás and spearheaded by the Spanish Ports Authority," said Enagás

"This initiative is turning Spain into the leader in this field in Europe, which is also aided by its privileged geographical placement as the gateway to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic."
