LNG Bunkering Facilities Planned for Piraeus
Greece's Port of Piraeus is planning a liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling station, new agency Prensa Latina reports, citing Qatar Petroleum International (QPI).
Greek Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has said that, while no Greek vessels currently run on LNG, a passenger ship using the fuel will be part of the nation's fleet by 2014.
The Greek coastal shipping industry has been looking into the possible adoption of LNG bunkers, the news site Shipping Herald reported earlier this month.
In 2012, Greece and China began a €1.2 million ($1.6 million) research project on the use of LNG bunkers, and the Hellenic Register of Shipping (HRS) said at the time that the fuel "is expected to dominate in the near future" due to its ability to reduce emissions and operating costs.
