UK bunker supplier Geos Group (Geos) last week said it has seen an increase in spot enquiries for Emissions Control Area (ECA) compliant fuels since new sulfur limits came into force on January 1, 2015.

"We have seen some uplift in spot demand for MGO since January”, said Geos's Commercial Director, Adrian Proctor.

"We are in discussions with several customers about meeting their future fuel requirements on a contract basis – an arrangement that can ensure a secure, reliable supply source and more favourable pricing."

Geos exclusively supplies 1000ppm MGO which is one option shippers have to comply with the new sulfur cap of 0.10 percent by weight within ECAs.

The company also pointed to future developments, in particular a global 0.50 percent sulfur cap expected to be implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by 2020.

In January, Geos announced it had begun the physical supply of bunkers at Great Yarmouth, England, and expanded operations in Scotland.
