Dutch shipyard Damen is to convert a dreger ship to run on liquified natural gas and marine gasoil.

French company GIE Dragages-Ports has commissioned work which will take place at Damen's facilities in Dunkerque.

The conversion project has secured the support of the European Union (EU).

The EU subsidy for the work comes under the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency via its Connecting Europe Facility programme.

The conversion also forms part of Franco-Spanish consortium to promote the use of LNG by smaller ships operating on the Atlantic coasts of Spain and France and up into the English Channel.

"We believe in the fast growth of LNG as a marine fuel," said Alexandre Richerd, sales manager at Damen Shiprepair & Conversion.

The work is scheduled to take place in the second half of 2018.
