Oil major Shell has earmarked a ship to become its third liquified natural gas (LNG) bunker tanker.

At a naming ceremony in Rotterdam yesterday, a Shell executive said that a third such tanker is "in the making", according to energy news provider LNG World Shipping.

"Number three is in the making and, already, ships number four and five are on the cards," downstream LNG manager Lauran Wetemans was quoted as saying by the news provider.

The move would equip the LNG/LPG carrier Coral Methane with an LNG bunkering capability.

LNG bunker tanker Cardissa was named in Rotterdam yesterday. Shell announced that it would charter a second such tanker in August.

LNG as bunker fuel is seen in the industry as a viable alternative to conventional oil-based residual fuel. However, a lack of infrastructure is seen as a major drag on its development while stricter environmental regulations are driving interest in alternative fuels for ships  Shell has been an enthusiastic support of LNG bunker fuel.
