Tallink Allows Option for Second LNG Powered Ferry to Lapse
Estonia-based AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) has allowed its option for a second liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled ferry from Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku Oy (Meyer Turku) to expire on the last day of February, according to Finnish media reports.
Tapani Mylly, communication manager for Meyer Turku, is reported to have confirmed that the ferry operator has not exercised the option for a second vessel, but notes that, while there is not firm agreement, Tallink will continue with discussions on the construction of the second LNG-powered vessel for the coming years.
The value of the first LNG ferry, which is currently under construction and would be virtually identical to the second ship option if it was to be built, is said to come at a price of €230 million ($256.6 million).
At the beginning of August, Ship & Bunker reported that the construction of Tallink's first new LNG fast ferry had begun.
The vessels keel is said to have been laid at the beginning of February, and is set for completion in early 2017.
