The Poseidon Med II project today said the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an eco-friendly fuel in Patras was the focus of discussion during an event held at the Greek port city on Friday.

The event, which was co-organised by the Patras Port Authority - one of the participating ports in the European co-funded Poseidon Med II project - brought together representatives from the Municipality of Patras, as well as stakeholders from local social and industry sectors.

The event was intended to offer a forum for discussion among local stakeholders on the deployment of LNG as an alternative marine fuel and its potential for sustainable energy development at Western Greece.

"Patras Port Authority sets as high priority the LNG establishment in port. At initial stage, it will accommodate LNG bunkering operations, expandable for industrial and domestic use. Within Poseidon Med II, the installation is designed in full alignment with the strict provisions of SEVESO Directive," said Nikos Kontoes, President & Managing Director of Patras Port Authority.

"This LNG unit will contribute to the sustainable development for the port of Patras, linking the currently isolated Western Greece with energy networks.  Social-economic development and employment are among the key benefits for Western Greece, which is the third poorest region in Greece, as well as the environmental protection for the port of Patras and the wider area."

During the meeting, emphasis is said to have been placed on LNG bunkering installations in Patras Port that have been designed within Poseidon Med II framework, as well as safety aspects and global best practices and case-studies.

The event also highlighted the establishment of Revithoussa terminal as regional LNG hub for the regional supply chain and discussed monitoring of air emissions at regional ports.

In October, the Poseidon Med II project saw a workshop held at the Revithoussa LNG Terminal - an event that hosted discussion on the development of a national regulatory framework for Greece for LNG bunkering.
