The Government of Mauritius says it is exploring opportunities for cooperation with Iran in a number of areas, including bunkering.

The development came as part of a meeting in Port Louis earlier this week between Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, and Mohammad Moniri Nik, the Ambassador of Iran to Mauritius.

The ambassador called Mauritius a platform towards Africa, explaining that Iran is therefore looking reinforce exchanges with the island.

"A working group has been set up at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade to work jointly with the Iranian diplomatic mission with the aim of  taking  forward the new ventures in the sectors discussed," said the government.

In April, Mauritius held a five-day training session in support of the country's bunkering industry, giving special focus to safety, pollution prevention, and security.
