The Government of Mauritius has announced that, in support of the country's bunkering industry, a five-day training session on the bunkering and shipping industry, which has a special focus on safety, pollution prevention, and security, began Monday in Bagatelle.

The training is an initiative of the DDS Knowledge Centre Ltd and Lloyds Register Marine in Dubai, and is intended to provide training to about 14 company directors and managerial officers within the petroleum and logistics industry.

Soodesh S. Callichurn, Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations, Employment and Training, speaking at the training's opening, suggested that maritime development, transshipment activities, and the bunkering industry in Mauritius could propel the country to a leading role in the Indian Ocean region.

Callichurn said the bunkering industry is an innovative sector that can offer many employment opportunities, adding that, if young Mauritians are provided the necessary tools, they can be trained to replace foreigners currently working in the local bunkering sector.
