The Port of Rotterdam Wednesday announced that the electric container ship BON JOVI was named during a ceremony in Rotterdam on Saturday.

The Nedcargo ship is set to transport approximately 600 million bottles of Heineken beer per year between Alphen aan den Rijn and Rotterdam

"BON JOVI consumes 25 percent less fuel than other vessels with the same dimensions and is able to carry more containers," explained the port.

"In addition, the ship experiences less drag thanks to its special hull design. As a result, the vessel only needs two 192KW diesel generators to power its electric propulsion system."

Further plans seek to replace these generators with a hydrogen cell within the next four years - cutting the vessel's CO2 emissions to "virtually zero."

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that Heineken, Nedcargo, and GoodFuels had launched a pilot project to demonstrate a "sustainable" drop-in marine fuel on-board of the For Ever – an inland barge dedicated to transporting beer from the Heineken brewery in Zoeterwoude to the deep-sea terminals in Rotterdam.
