A new Greek coalition of bunker suppliers, classification societies, ship owners, energy companies, and port authorities has been established to promote the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as marine fuel, TradeWinds reports.

The coalition - known as the Marine LNG Network - currently has 16 members, including the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners' Association (HSSA), the Greek Shipowners' Association of Passenger Shipping Companies (SEEN), and the Public Gas Corporation of Greece S.A. (DEPA).

"We aim to create and spread knowledge and adequate information, and exchange best practices," said Charalampos Simantonis, HSSA's chairman.

HSSA says the Marine LNG Network is the first such initiative in Southern Europe, noting that the coalition is modelled on similar initiatives in Germany and the Netherlands.

Marine LNG Network is expected to meet regularly, conduct reviews of legislation and technical standards, disseminate related information, and put forth proposals on how LNG bunkering should be implemented in Greece.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the Poseidon Med II has also been working toward developing the use of LNG as bunkers across Greece.
